Afghanistan MCC Spirit of Cricket camps Published: 15 May 2012

Former Afghanistan captain, Raees Ahmadzai, recently ran two MCC Spirit of Cricket camps in the troubled country.

Ahmadzai, now Director of AYCSO (Afghan Youth Cricket Support Organisation), is working with MCC and the charity Afghan Connection to run MCC Spirit of Cricket camps.

These camps are designed to encourage Afghan boys and girls to play cricket, and in turn build confidence, learn about sportsmanship and instil hope in Afghan youth.

The most recent camps took place in the towns of Ghanzi and Kapisa. Photos taken at the camps can be seen below, and more can be seen on our Flickr account:

The MCC-Afghanistan relationship began with a historic fixture between the two sides in Mumbai in March 2006 where an MCC team, led by former England captain Mike Gatting, were thrashed by 179 runs.

Since then Matthew Fleming, the former Kent and England all-rounder, has travelled to Afghanistan on several occasions with Afghan Connection to encourage Afghan boys and girls to play cricket.
