Ex- YC Hales in England T20 squad Published: 26 August 2011

Alex Hales, former MCC Young Cricketer, has been called up to the full England Twenty20 squad, to face India at Old Trafford on Wednesday 31 August.

Hales is one of two uncapped players in the 13-man squad – alongside Somerset’s Jos Buttler - while Kevin Pietersen is rested from the five match One Day International series.

22-year-old Hales’ selection comes on the back of a superb season for Nottinghamshire in which he amassed 544 runs in the Friends Life Twenty20 cup – the second highest so far.

The tall opening batsman has been involved with the England Lions this summer and is tipped for future honours in all forms of the game.

Hales will be desperate for the chance to prove himself against India, with two T20 matches against the West Indies also scheduled for September.

Youth influx

After a youthful side beat Ireland in a rain affected match in Dublin, England’s selectors have continued the theme for the T20 match and ODI series – with the fourth match taking place at Lord’s on 11 September.

In addition to Hales, uncapped 20-year-old Somerset batsman Jos Buttler has been included in the T20 squad, while Ben Stokes, also 20, is picked for both squads.

Geoff Miller, National Selector, said: “We're very excited to have included some bright young players in the form of Ben Stokes, Jos Buttler and Alex Hales, all of whom have proved themselves domestically and will now be looking to successfully take the step up to international level.”

Hales spent a season as a YC in 2007 where his performances attracted the attention of Nottinghamshire.

The 6’4” right-hander has since played his part in a County Championship winning campaign in 2010 and has established a reputation for his hard hitting stroke play.

No ‘KP’

The biggest surprise in the ODI squad is the absence of Pietersen who has reestablished himself as one of the most fearsome batsmen in the game this summer, topping the run charts in the Tests with India.

Miller added: “The decision to omit Kevin Pietersen from the One-Day squad is in line with our policy of sensibly managing player workloads and will give the opportunity to another batsmen to test himself batting at number four."

Pietersen was omitted from the series against Pakistan at the tail end of last summer after a poor run of form and will miss this series despite his excellent summer.

Ian Bell, Stokes or Eoin Morgan seem most likely to replace Pietersen at number four as England once again rejig the makeup of their mercurial one-day outfit.

The bowling is more predictable, with James Anderson once again left out of the T20 party. Samit Patel’s return to favour with England continues – he is in both squads.
