The MCC tour to Uganda has got off to a busy and enjoyable start.

After a day’s acclimatisation and practice at the Lugogo Oval, followed by a charming reception at the Katikati Restaurant hosted by the Ugandan Cricket Association, today saw the cricket action begin at the delightful Kyambogo Oval.

This is a significant ground for the MCC - the square has been recently re-laid as a result of an MCC grant to improve facilities.

It nestles amongst jacaramdah trees, and today saw strong local support headed by the new chairman of Ugandan cricket, Dr Kayto Sabele.

The toss was won by MCC captain Jamie Dalrymple, who had no hesitation in electing to bat.

In the face of a controlled opening spell and some lively movement, MCC openers Shafayat (29) and Adams (15) made steady progress on a pitch offering assistance to the new ball bowlers Taremwa (2-31) and Sebanja, supported by the impressive Junior Ruyange (4-18).

The Ugandan bowlers’ discipline and sensational out cricket paid dividends as wickets fell steadily.

At 74-5 matters looked perilous, until Keith Newell (45) and Chris Peploe (50) came together in a gritty partnership of 82.

It took two outstanding catches in the deep to remove them.

Lusty blows from Dave Harrison (11) and Will Howard (15) saw the MCC innings close at 202-9 after 50 overs.

The Uganda reply began heartily in the face of hostile opening spells by Dave Harrison and Jon Wightman (3-31).

A run out from the deep by Mark Wagh saw the Ugandan side reduced to 54-6.

Spirited resistance by Martin Ondeko (34) and Ruyange (21) halted MCC’s progress in a stand of 38, until Adam Syddall (2-2) and Keith Newell (2-10) made light work of the tail, and earned a well deserved 85 run win for the MCC.
