2012 Olympic archery dates confirmed

England captain Andrew Strauss tries his hand at archery The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games (LOCOG) has announced the competition events for London 2012, including the archery at Lord’s.

The archery competition at the Home of Cricket starts on the opening day of Olympic competition, 28 July, with the ranking round on the previous day - the same day as the opening ceremony.

Competition takes place over seven days and concludes with the men’s individual final on 3 August.

Tickets for all events go on sale between 15 March and 26 April with archery tickets priced between £20 and £95 per session.

Both team events will be decided in what promises to be a thrilling opening two days of the competition.

The individual competition then kicks off on the third day’s action, with the 64 male and 64 female competitors shooting off against each other in head-to-head ties.

The event reaches its climax with the women’s final on the penultimate day before the men’s competition wraps up a historic week of sport at Lord's.

Change of scenery

Lord's was part of the 2012 Olympic plans back before the bid was won in 2005. In September last year, Westminster Council approved planning permission for the event to go ahead as planned.

Lord's will look markedly different for the 2012 games Lord’s will be transformed for the competition, with two temporary stands erected on the outfield at the Home of Cricket accommodating 4,500 spectators.

Competitors will shoot from the Pavilion End of the Ground across the square, with the target placed on the other side of the square.

The hallowed grass damaged by the temporary stands will be replaced with fresh grass - already being grown - at the end of the competition to ensure the speedy return of cricket to Lord’s.

In preparation for the games, Lord's will host an Olympic test event in October 2011.
