Day two summary

Australia: 156-8 CLOSE
England: 425 all out

Batsmen (runs): Nathan Hauritz (3) & Peter Siddle (3)
Bowlers: Pavilion End: Stuart Broad
Nursery End: James Anderson

6:42pm Finally official word comes - play is abandoned for the day. That's the close.

Thanks again for joining us on Lords.org - come back tomorrow at 10am for more great Ashes action from The Home of Cricket.

6:37pm The rain's getting heavier now and all bar a few, hardy souls have left the stands. No official word yet but if they restart now then Her Majesty will open the England bowling tomorrow...

Lords.org commentary icon: Rain stops play6:28pm As if to seal the deal - we're getting sprinklings of rain and the covers come on. The umpires are still out there I wonder whether they might officially call it a day.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org have spotted something...6:23pm Umpires come together halfway down the pitch - they're discussing the light again - checking the shadows from the ball.

Lords.org commentary icon - Bad lightThey offer the light and the batsmen gratefully scurry off. At nearly half-past six - I'd be surprised if we get any more play today - but if we do - you'll hear about it on Lords.org first.

6:19pm 49th over: Hauritz steals a single which will bring the new man, Siddle, on to face Anderson.

Siddle binks one off the shoulder to get off the mark - they run three.

6:13pm 48th over: Stuart Broad bowling to Hauritz - as the umpires discuss the light again.

Broad jags that one back at Haddin - "ooohs" from the slips and the crowd.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outAnother wicket for Broad and another catch for Cook! Haddin's gone - England really into the tail now.

Australia 152-8 - Haddin - c. Cook b. Broad - 28

6:09pm 47th over: Australia need 76 more to avoid the follow-on. Whether England would enforce that is another matter - but England still need to get these last three wickets.

Update on the match times: We can continue until 7:10pm today - light and weather permitting. Those earlier rain delays have pushed the schedule back quite a lot.

6:04pm 46th over: Broad still on at the Pavilion End.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...The Lord's floodlights are firing up again. Hopefully that will fend-off any concerns about the light.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outJohnson's out pulling! Broad pitched that short, tempting Johnson and he just skied it to Cook - who steadied himself and took a solid catch near the boundary.

Australia 148-7 - Johnson - c. Cook b. Broad - 4

The new batsman is the spinner, Nathan Hauritz - he'll surely have extra padding on that finger he dislocated yesterday. Two runs for Haddin bring up 150 for Australia.

6:00pm 45th over: A strong drive from Haddin - who is still batting well - and they run two.

Andrew Flintoff celebrates after bowling Michael Hussey at Lord's
Flintoff celebrates bowling Hussey
5:56pm 44th over: As if you needed it - here's a picture to warm the heart of any England fan - a fired-up Andrew Flintoff celebrating the wicket of Mike Hussey.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org have spotted something...Broad bowling this over. Something for our Australian readers - it's getting a little gloomy again. If offered the light, there's no doubt the batsmen would take the chance to regroup.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourMore cheer for our Aussie cousins - Johnson chops a loose one from Broad away for four to get off the mark.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman out5:50pm 43rd over: Anderson's obviously feeling pretty good! North swung and missed and Anderson's cleaned him up. Out!

Australia 139-6 - North - b. Anderson - 0

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman out for a duck (no runs)North, out for a long-winded duck. Australia still 286 runs behind - with six men down.

Lords.org commentary icon - a bowler bowls a maiden overAnderson has four wickets already - could he be set for a third entry on the Lord's Honours Boards? A wicket maiden for Anderson - great bowling. What a day he's had - with bat and ball!

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...5:49pm: A short break in play - James Anderson adjusts his footwear and what looks like strapping around his ankle. A drink and tablet for Stuart Broad - that could be an energy tablet, vitams or perhaps pain-killers?

Lords.org commentary icon - the bowling team bring on a new bowler5:43pm 42nd over: A bowling chage, as Stuart Broad replaces Andrew Flintoff at the Pavilion End.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourA strong push back down the ground and another boundary four for Brad Haddin - he's batting well - past the diving Anderson at mid-on.

Michael Hussey is clean bowled by Andrew Flintoff
Left - and out: Hussey misjudges one from Flintoff
5:39pm 41st over: As Anderson bowls this over, here's a great photo from our snapper-on-the-spot Matt Bright. Michael Hussey stepping over one he wishes he hadn't... clean bowled by Andrew Flintoff.

Three more runs for Haddin, driven down to long off - a long chase for Graham Onions.

5:34pm 40th over: Flintoff still has three slips and a gully in place - a silly mid-off in there too.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourShort and wide from Flintoff and Haddin cuts that one away for four - too generous from Flintoff.

A nick and a fast-run three from Haddin there too. North, still on nought, on strike.

5:30pm 39th over: Anderson bustling in again, trying to keep these batsmen from settling.

Update on the sub fielder: It's Kevin Pietersen who's off the field - that Achilles injury seemingly causing him a great many problems.

To update you on the laws - whilst they expressly say a batsman may be out if the ball lodges in a fielder's clothing they could be caught out - if it lodges in a batsman's clothing it's a dead ball.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourThat one's not dead but it's bonus runs for Australia - a miss by Prior and it runs for four byes.

5:24pm 38th over: Great stuff from England - but let's not get carried away. Both these batsmen got centuries in Cardiff.

Hilarity around Lord's as Haddin digs that one down into his pads and walks around, pigeon-toed as the fielders close in - Haddin (mistakenly) thinking that if the fielder plucks it out from his pads, he'd be out caught.

In fact, MCC, as the Guardian of the Laws - I can tell you that would have been dead ball.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourHaddin drives past the substitute fielder - Alex London on for Stuart Broad - we think.

Lords.org commentary icon - the bowling team bring on a new bowler5:18pm 37th over: Marcus North the new batsman - not much newer than Clarke - a real opportunity for England's bowlers.

James Anderson is brought back to dart at these two batsmen.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outAnderson strikes in his first over back! Clarke couldn't get enough bat on that one and just fished that one firmly to Alastair Cook at mid-wicket.

Australia 111-4 - Clarke - c. Cook b. Anderson - 1

Anderson has a massive grin on his face - and well he might. Word we heard earlier is that Haddin has been rather unwell recently, as has Peter Siddle. This will be a real test for the wicket-keeper/batsman. A misfield from Bopara gives Haddin three runs.

5:13pm 36th over: Three slips and a gully for Flintoff bowling to Hussey.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outOut! Flintoff's got Hussey! A huge cheer for the massively popular all-rounder.

Australia 111-4 - Hussey b. Flintoff - 51

That was the last ball of the over - a wicket maiden for Flintoff, reward at last for the big Lancastrian. Hussey had a touch of the Strauss/Pietersen's there - leaving one that burst onto his off stump.

5:08pm 35th over: Prior's appealing for a catch as Hussey swings and misses - he persuades Onions into the appeal too but not umpire Koertzen - standing in his 100th Test.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org have spotted something...5:07pm Clarke's waving to the Australia dressing room - it looks like he wants some more padding. You can't blame him - facing a 90mph+ Flintoff, I'd want a medieval suit of armour!

5:01pm 34th over: If he doesn't already, Onions must be falling in love with Lord's. He gets a noisy reception from the Edrich stand as he moves in to his place, fielding at long leg for this Flintoff over.

Flintoff's roughing up the new batsman Clarke, who has to duck under a whizzing bouncer. The Lord's crowd really fired up by that wicket - cheering Flintoff on.

Clarke off the mark from the second ball of the over.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a half-centuryHussey nudges a gentle single - fifty for the formerly out of form Australia batsman - well played.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...4:54pm 33rd over: Andrew Strauss has another long chat to Graham Onions. Lots of expansive arm gestures as they discuss field placings.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outKatich is out! Magnificent catch by Stuart Broad.

Australia 103-3 - Katich - c. Broad b. Onions - 48

Broad, fielding at long leg had to really motor to get into position - and even then had to dive - but he took a great catch. Broad's mobbed by his team-mates - that's a big wicket for England.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourNo prolonged celebrations for England, Hussey times the next ball away for four - he's one run from his 50.

4:50pm 32nd over: Katich nudges a gently run two - these batsmen in a two-man race to a half-century.

Flintoff makes a rather unnecessary dive to field that from his own bowling - concerns over his knee injury as he gets to his feet rather gingerly.

4:44pm 31st over: Onions continues from the Nursery End - nicked for three by Hussey as he moves into the forties too.

A grimace from Hussey as he steps around that one - it darted back in at him just flicking his shirt.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourThat's better from the Aussie number four - a well timed drive into the off side for four runs.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourStraight and full from Onions to Katich and the batsman just moves an effortless push down the ground, past the bowler for four. A single makes it 100-up for Australia.

Lords.org commentary icon - the bowling team bring on a new bowler4:41pm 30th over: It looks like Andrew Strauss has tossed Freddie Flintoff the ball at the Pavilion End.

Flintoff gets another big cheer from the Lord's crowd - three slips and a gully in place.

4:39pm: The players trot down the steps of the Pavilion - they'll have had something more healthy than chocolate cake... I hope!

We'll be underway again soon. Stick with Lords.org.

4:37pm: Yummy - a tasty slice of chocolate cake for us to enjoy up in the Investec Media Centre. We really do get looked after well up here.

Lords.org live text commentary icon - tea4:21pm: Australia 87-2 at tea and Katich and Hussey have done an excellent job of building a steady, solid partnership.

4:17pm 29th over: This is shaping into a good contest. Katich and Hussey are starting to look settled and England have to do their utmost to unsettle them.

Two from Katich takes him into the forties and that's tea.

  • Ashes: Key players - prior to this match, no lesser authority than Adam Gilchrist predicted the battle between Swann and Australia's left-handers could be key to this Series.

Lords.org commentary icon - the bowling team bring on a new bowler4:13pm 28th over: Andrew Strauss opts to bring on Graeme Swann, the spinner.

Like Onions, Swann enjoyed a great outing at Lord's last time out. He was man-of-the-match against the West Indies. A slip and a silly mid-off fielder (Cook, under the helmet) in place.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourHussey finds his way through the close-in fielders and pushes that one all the way to the Tavern Stand for four.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, four4:09pm 27th over: Katich drives expansively for a flowing four - a bit too wide that delivery from Onions.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourA chopping cut from Katich and he scores another four - past a diving Ravi Bopara at gully.

4:04pm 26th over: The Compton Stand give Onions their roar of approval as he trots down to field at long leg. He fields the next ball too - a single from the first ball of Broad's over.

Fourth ball of the over goes airbourne! It falls well short of Cook on the square leg boundary - but the opening batsman makes a great stop to prevent four.

Broad fires down a bouncer which is well over the batsman's head - Matt Prior make a goalie-style save to stop that one.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourKevin Pietersen makes a diving attempt on the boundary - but cannot stop that going for four. He's also walking rather gingerly after that short sprint and dive - that troublesome Achilles no doubt.

3:59pm 25th over: A great delivery from Onions - it goes clean through Katich! An escape for the batsman - he somehow managed to avoid getting glove or bat on that. A good take by Prior.

Lords.org commentary icon - a bowler bowls a maiden overKatich plays and misses at the fourth ball of the over too. Onions getting claps of encouragement from the slip cordon. Good over from Onions - a maiden.

3:55pm 24th over: Matt Prior, the England wicket-keeper is positively sprinting from end to end between overs - England hussling.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourThe clouds part over Lord's again and once again, bright sunshine in NW8. A smart, uppish drive from Hussey brings him four more. 50 partnership. These two steadying the Australian ship.

3:51pm 23rd over: Andrew Strauss has a good chat to Graham Onions and Stuart Broad before this over - keeping his bowlers on their toes no doubt.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourOnions fires that in short again and Hussey saw it coming - he tilts onto his backfoot and pulls it away for four. Lovely shot.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...One of the bowlers' follow-throughs is filled in with some sawdust at the Nursery End of the wicket.

3:47pm 22nd over: Hussey runs a rapid two to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Lords.org commentary icon - the bowling team bring on a new bowler3:42pm 21st over: Bowling change: Anderson is off and Graham Onions will bowl from the Nursery End now.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...Katich driving the first couple of balls, stopped in the covers. One of those fielders, Kevin Pietersen - who's testing his sore Achilles - it's definitely giving him some grief.

A neat single for Katich brings up Australia's 50 - from 125 balls.

3:40pm 20th over: Players back on the field and we'll start with the remaining three balls of Stuart Broad's over, from the Pavilion End.

For your tea break - it's moved to 4:10pm.

James Anderson and Stuart Broad celebrate and appeal all at once
Anderson and Broad celebrate Ponting's wicket
3:36pm: Whilst we're waiting here's a great action photo - James Anderson celebrating as he has Ricky Ponting - he thought - LBW... who was then given out caught by Strauss.

3:25pm: Your emails - Definitely an Aussie... our competition winner Kate just sent in her t-shirt size details and concluded the email with "Thanks heaps."

Well done again Kate. Thank you for all your competition entries - stick with Lords.org - we'll have more fun, free to enter competitions with great prizes over all five days of the Test.

For those of you wondering, the answer to the question: "Who took the first wicket of the match on Thursday?" The answer was, unlikely as it may seem, Mitchell Johnson. The Aussie quick trapped Alastair Cook LBW.

3:20pm: And all of a sudden Lord's is bathed in bright sunshine again. The best word for the weather today: schizophrenic. The covers are coming off - hurrah!

3:16pm: And the winner is...

Kate Newhouse who's in London but... judging by her request for a gold shirt - she's an Aussie! Boo... I mean, well done Kate. Congratulations. You've got mail. We need to know which size you'd like!

Let's hope, for England's sake, that Kate's win is not a sign of things to come!

3:11pm: That's it - no more competition entries please. We're gping to pick our winner - you'll read it here first... unless we email you as our winner!

3:06pm: Just a few minutes left until we pick our winner.

Just an update on the match - Stuart Broad's over was curtailed at three balls old by the rain. He'll bowl the rest of it after this delay.

The good news for the 29,000+ fans in the ground today - England can claim an extra half hour to make up some of the play lost to rain today.

3pm: Still - we've plenty to entertain you in this delay. We're going to draw our prize winner in the next few minutes.

The exclusive Ashes 2009 event t-shirt - in gold or white
Win one of these t-shirts
Now's your last chance to enter our free competition - and win a special Ashes t-shirt - exclusive to Lord's.

We'll draw the winner's name from the hat at 3:10pm - so get your entry in now!

2:56pm: The covers roll out again, the hover cover protecting the wicket. The rain gets rather heavier again. This really is frustrating.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, four2:53pm 20th over: The first ball of Broad's next over and Katich nudges that one away, all the way to the fine leg boundary for four.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourFour more from Katich but it will be the last action before another rain delay. The mizzle moves in again.

Lords.org commentary icon: Rain stops playOnce again the rain's far from heavy but enough to deter the umpires who call the players off. Frustrating.

2:49pm 19th over: Some encouragement for Anderson - the weather's still rather gloomy which may assist the quicker seamers. Katich tries to pull one that was nowhere near short enough and nearly played on to his own stumps.

Apparently the problem with the network is caused by those rather flashy i-phones. Lovely as they are, apparently unless people alter the settings they all try to log-on to the internet at every available opporunity. The huge wave of i-phones doing so all at once rather overloaded our system.

Apologies again - we're back now. Australia 37-2 and our IT team feeling a few years older!

Huge apologies for the delay - the entire network around Lord's just nose-dived. We're back online now. You've missed an over and half and around eight runs. Everyting missed in that internet-less window is below:

2:44pm 18th over: Still Stuart Broad at the Pavilion End. Hussey nicking a single from the first ball.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, fourKatich rocks back, swings the bat and drills that one away for four runs.

2:43pm: Here comes 'Morgs' the MCC groundsman - he pouring a neat pile of sawdust, from a black bin bag, at each end of the ground.

2:40pm 17th over: Anderson's back on at the Nursery End as we restarted after the rain delay. He's calling to the groundstaff for some sawdust to be used to dry his hands.

The floodlights at Lord's are looking a little confused - they were half on but now they're being switched off it seems?

2:19pm Most of the brollies in the stands are coming down again - the ground staff are pushing all the water off the covers. The umpires may be out to inspect things soon if the rain holds off.

Lords.org commentary icon: Rain stops play2:15pm: The rain is looking slightly heavier now. The Lord's Groundstaff whizz into action unfurling all the covers. These guys are so well drilled they make the Wimbledon cover-draggers look like the fabled tortoise - and the Lord's team have a far, far bigger area to cover.

Stick with us through the rain delay - hopefully it will be short-lived. Have you seen our great competition and special Lord's online shop offer - just for our Live@Lord's readers?

2:08pm: In the meantime: Your emails - Jackie M has written in with a topic for discussion:

"I am a avid supporter of Test cricket, and whilst watching the Ashes am appealing for someone to ask the players please DO NOT SPIT whilst out on the field. Myself and my family FIND THIS DISGUSTING and not exactly healthy.

"Two players who seem to do this a lot: Ricky Ponting and Fred Flintoff, have been the most noticeable, but they all seem to think that this is acceptable behavior, it is not a good example to set for the public, young people and overseas viewers I think. Please ask them to confine this behavior to their own houses etc and not in public!"

What do you think? Send us your emails. Do players spit too often? They would tell you it's required, rather than "disgusting" - should the cricket authorities address this?

Lords.org commentary icon: Rain stops play2:07pm Oh dear... here comes the famous Lord's hover-cover - the rain's coming down. It's not heavy rain, more whispy 'mizzle'. Hopefully this will just be a short break.

2:02pm 16th over: The official line on the (new) floodlights at Lord's - it's the umpire's call and the Lord's rigs are lighting up.

A nicely shaping delivery from Broad, seaming back in at Katich but they nick a single.

The Queen walks down the Pavilion steps at Lord's
The Queen comes out to greet the players in the lunch interval
1:59pm 15th over: Still Jimmy Anderson at the Nursery End. Here's our first picture of The Queen too - coming down the Pavilion steps at lunch, with MCC President Derek Underwood.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...The umpire's had a chat between overs there - concerns over the light sadly, as the clouds and gloom gather. No rain but it is rather dark at the moment.

Lords.org commentary icon - the bowling team bring on a new bowler1:55pm 14th over: Flintoff is given a rest - Stuart Broad replaces him at the Pavilion End.

Your emails A worrying email in from B. Tryba:

"I am sure the Queen will be extremely pleased at not only being spotted in a blue frock with matching hat, but also as having been demoted to rank of Princess by yourselves!"

Uh-oh... did we really do that? Let's hope not... I'll be sent to The Tower!

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, four1:50pm 13th over: Hussey starts well after lunch - timing that one back down the ground. No real strength in the shot just good timing - four.

Two more for Katich moves him into double figures.

1:49pm Here we go, players on the field - Jimmy Anderson warming his arm up again at the Nursery End.

1:46pm Fear not - you're not missing any action. The restart was delayed as the players were presented to Her Majesty The Queen during the lunch interval. We'll be restarting play again soon.

Australia 22-2 at lunch

Lords.org commentary icon: Lunch1:01pm: The players trot off, England all smiles, Australia stiff-jawed determination.

A woeful start, batting for England but a great start with the ball.

We're going to take a break for a few minutes - we suggest you do too. Get yourself some refreshments and join us again for the restart at 1:40pm.

Don't miss...

12:56pm 12th over: This will probably be the last over before lunch - Flintoff to bowl it. Flintoff bowling well over 90mph... that last one clocked at 92mph. Scary.

93mph with the third ball of the over and Flintoff eye-balling Hussey in his follow through. At 6'4", bowling at that speed you almost feel sorry for the Aussies... almost.

And that's lunch.

12:53pm 11th over: First ball of this Anderson over and Hussey's beaten! Wicket-keeper Prior and all the slips join the crowd in their "ooohs" but no bat on that one.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, four12:49pm 10th over: Katich binks that one away for four runs - his first boundary. Flintoff still pitching it in short to the left-hander, Katich just helping that one on it's way to fine leg for four.

We'll have maybe one or two more overs before lunch - get ready to scramble off and grab yourself a bite to eat before coming back to us for more.

12:48pm: Your emails Claire in Cambridge has written in with a question - thanks for your email Claire:

"What is the weather like there? It is absolutely pouring it down in Cambridge and am hoping it isn't headed your way. Any news on the days weather forecast?"

As I write Claire the sun is breaking out at Lord's - we're bathed in glorious sunshine. There's still some cloud around, England's swing bowlers won't mind that. We're hopeful the rain will hold off - the forecast still says rain but then it said rain this morning and there was only a sprinkling. Fingers crossed.

12:44pm 9th over: Hussey scored just three in the first Test at Cardiff. He'll want to make a big improvement on that - Australia may need him to as well.

A great stop by Alastair Cook at short-leg prevents runs to keep the pressure on the batsmen.

12:40pm 8th over: Flintoff charging in and the crowd a really behind England now.

Katich off the mark at last with his first runs off the bat - from the 22nd ball he's faced.

12:34pm 7th over: Ponting caught leaden footed by Anderson, real nip in at the batsman for the bowler known as 'The Burnley Express'.

"Oooohs" around Lord's as Ponting drives at that one but mishits it, the ball just dropping on his toes.

Anderson's appealing - England want the LBW or a catch... they're all shouting! Umpire Koertzen keeps his hands in his pocket... England are still celebrating. The umpires are conferring...

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outHe's gone! Ponting's out! Wild applause around Lord's as the Australia captain walks off. Controversy here. There's no TV appeals in this match - the umpires could only have referred it to the TV umpire for a decision on if the ball carried to the catching fielder.

Australia 10-2 - Ponting - c. Strauss b. Anderson - 2

Two batsmen at the crese on zero... Katich still to get off the mark.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, four12:30pm 6th over: Katich is calling for the sight-screen to be moved around as Flintoff comes around the wicket. That one's off his pads and runs all the way for four leg byes.

Lords.org commentary icon - a bowler bowls a maiden overReal dart for Flintoff with the next ball - Katich fending at it half-heartedly just drawing the bat out of the way in time. The 6'4" Lancashire-lad gives Katich the eye as he fends away another spearing delivery. A third consecutive maiden for 'Freddie'.

12:26pm 5th over: Ponting's off the mark - a neatly placed push for two.

Lords.org commentary icon - a bowler bowls a maiden over12:22pm 4th over: Flintoff charging in - three slips and two gullys in place - two batsmen on nought England will want to crank up the pressure on these batsmen.

Another maiden for Flintoff.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman scores a boundary, four12:16pm 3rd over: First runs of the day and there are four of them. Hughes gives himself room and punches Anderson through the off side.

Lords.org commentary icon - batsman outEngland have a wicket! The slowest of slow fingers from umpire Rudi Koertzen but up it goes eventually and Anderson has Hughes caught behind down the leg side.

Australia 4-1 - Hughes - c. Prior b. Anderson - 4

Hughes tried to leave it but just got glove to it. That brings in Ricky Ponting. The Aussie captain is arguably one of the game's greats - but he has never scored a 100 at Lord's to get on the Honours Board... yet.

Ponting survives a half-hearted appeal and Anderson gets great applause around the Ground for that over.

12:11pm 2nd over: It'll be Flintoff... the Lord's crowd roar their approval and cheer Flintoff into his first delivery.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...Her Majesty The Queen is enjoying the match from the MCC Committee Room - Prince Philip alongside her in his MCC tie. Her Royal Highness looking resplendent in an (England supporting) blue, with matching hat.

Lords.org commentary icon - a bowler bowls a maiden overBack on the pitch - Flintoff starts with a maiden over too - encouraging for England.

12:08pm 1st over: It will be 'Jimmy' Anderson opening the attack from the Nursery End. Hughes on strike. Three slips (Strauss, Flintoff and Collingwood) and a gully (Swann).

Lords.org commentary icon - a bowler bowls a maiden overBopara's at point, Cook is at square leg, Pietersen at mid-off and Broad at mid-on. Only Graham Onions is back on the boundary. A maiden over for Anderson.

12:06pm Players on the field... here we go with Australia's reply. Can Phil Hughes put his Middlesex experience of this pitch to good use? Can James Anderson maintain his good form at The Home of Cricket?

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org spot something...12:04pm:_ Matt Prior's out the outfield doing some catching practice. The England gloveman has taken some criticism for his work behind the stumps. With England defending just over 400, his own contribution a mere eight runs, Prior will want to hold onto every chance that comes his way.

12 noon: We'll have a brief break between innings now as England ready themselves to bowl. Anderson, Onions, Flintoff and Broad will have enjoyed watching the movement and hint of swing Hilfenhaus especially found this morning.

Who'll open the England attack? Strauss took some stick for opting for Broad ahead of Flintoff in Cardiff. Anderson's surely a shoe-in. Who would you opt for?

Send us your emails.

11:59am: Onions left on 17 not out - that'll help his average. Great batting from England's two tail-enders.

England 425 all out

11:54am 102nd over: Paul Collingwood must be rubbing his hands together for his post career coaching role - his "batting buddy" Monty Panesar showed a marked improvement and wonderful rear-guard batting to save the Cardiff Test.

In Monty's absence, Collingwood has adopted Graham Onions...

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourPow - another four for Anderson! This is his highest score against Australia now and a record 10th wicket partnership against Australia at Lord's.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman outNext ball and Anderson's gone - a big edge to Hussey in the gully.

England 425 all out - Anderson - c. Hussey b. Johnson - 29

11:50am 101st over: Onions is just three runs away from out-scoring all bar Strauss, Cook and Pietersen too. That speaks volumes about the failings of England's middle order.

Good over from Hilfenhaus, testing the batsmen but stout defence from Onions.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a four11:46am 100th over: That won't make Siddle feel much better - watching Anderson carve away another four... followed by another! Remarkable batting by the tail-ender.

20 runs from just 19 balls for Anderson. He's now out-scored: Bopara; Collingwood; Prior; Flintoff; Broad and Swann. He'll be pressing to be moved up the order!

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourAustralia persevere with the short-stuff and Anderson's lapping it up - helping that one over two off side fielders for another four. The Lord's crowd are loving this.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org have spotted something...11:45am Peter Siddle back on the field, smiling and shrugging to his team-mates. Apparently he is now "officially unwell". How that differs from just being unwell is not clear - but he's not 100%.

11:41am 99th over: Anderson into double figures now and first Onions and then the Lancashire man tuck away neat singles.

Two more for Anderson as once again England's tail frustrate Australia.

Lords.org commentary icon: New bowler comes on11:35am 98th over: Rumours of a bit of a stomach bug in the Australia camp - word on BBC Test Match Special is that Siddle and wicket-keeper Brad Haddin were looking decidedly green around the gills yesterday.

As predicted, Mitchell Johnson replaces the "crook" Peter Siddle at the Pavilion End.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourA great psychological boost for England - Anderson rocks back and plays a lovely expansive shot for four - bringing up 400 for England.

11:32am 97th over: Anderson clips that one away from a well-directed edge and the batsmen run three. Hilfenhaus still on at the Nursery End - with Siddle and Hauritz off the field hurt - expect to see Mitchell Johnson soon.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourMeanwhile Onions is still adding to his score - a crashing four off Hilfenhaus takes him into double figures - lovely stroke.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org have spotted something...11:29am: Those wondering or worrying about Nathan Hauritz - Andrew McDonald is on as a substitute fielder, so Hauritz is still resting that sore finger. Reduced options for Australia.

The two members of the coaching staff are back on again and it's Peter Siddle who's walking off - perhaps he's carrying an injury too. A nightmare for Australia, left with just two front line bowlers on the field.

Lords.org commentary icon - Lords.org have spotted something...11:25am 96th over: Two of the Aussie entourage come onto the field for a chat with Ponting. Not sure what that was about. Siddle continues from the Pavilion End.

Onions is off the dreaded nought - a well-placed nudge and they run two.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourSiddle continues to rough Onions up with short stuff. He fends that one away, it beats the fielder and runs for four!

11:21am 95th over: Hilfenhaus, chasing his five-for, squares Anderson up who just about fends that off his pads. It really does look like a matter of time for England now after this catastrophic start.

11:18am 94th over: Anderson's off the mark - his long run of non-duck innings continues. Despite his great show with the ball in his debut at Lord's against the West Indies - Onions had a shocker with the bat, out first ball. He's already improved on that.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a four11:13am 93rd over: Stuart Broad nicks that one from Hilfenhaus and it runs all the way to the long leg boundary for the left-hander.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourBroad's throwing the bat about a bit now - England really need him to help them scrape past 400 if he can - but he gets a streaky edge for four.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman outThat didn't last long... Broad tries to drive but just gets another edge and this time plays onto his stumps. Another wicket for Hilfenhaus.

England 378-9 - Broad - b. Hilfenhaus - 12

Hilfenhaus has four wickets now - he's chasing a place on the Honours Boards. England have lost three wickets for 14 runs in 19 balls.

The one saving grace perhaps for England is that this may encourage their bowlers.

11:05am 92nd over: Johnson doesn't get the nod - it's Peter Siddle at the Pavilion End. Siddle straightens Broad up but he prods away for a single.

Siddle v Swann now - it was Siddle who repeatedly struck Swann on the body in Cardiff. Three slips, a gully and a silly point in place for Swann.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman outThere's the wicket! Ponting himself takes the catch in the slips and Swann's gone. Magnificent start by Australia.

England 370-8 - Swann - c. Ponting b. Siddle - 4

11am 91st over: Strauss will start, on strike first. It's Hilfenhaus with the ball in hand.

Lords.org commentary icon: Batsman outWhat a start for Australia! Strauss leaves one, second ball... a disastrous misjudgement as it clatters into his wicket.

England 364-7 - Strass - b. Hilfenhaus - 161

More pantomime mind games from Ponting. As Swann, who suffered under a barrage of short-pitched bowling in Cardiff, walks out to bat - Ponting positions himself at the crease playing shadow shots as he positions a cluster of fielders around the bat.

Lords.org commentary icon - a batsman hits a fourSwann's off the mark with a smoothly stroked four into the leg side.

10:58am: Here come the umpires, Billy Doctrove and Rudi Koertzen closely followed by the players - day two underway soon.

10:55am: It's a royal occasion at Lord's today. Ringing the five-minute bell, cricketing royalty in Richie Benaud.

In the Pavilion today - genuine royalty - Her Majesty The Queen will be in attendance.

10:45am: Just 15 minutes to go. First big call of the day: who will open the bowling for Australia?

Mitchell Johnson is the "strike" bowler for the Aussies but was very wayward, especially early on yesterday. The new ball is just a few overs old but will Ponting back his quickie?

Ben Hilfenhaus was the pick of the attack yesterday and seems likely to bowl from one end. Will Ponting opt for Johnson or Peter Siddle at the other end?

What do you think? - send us your emails Live@Lords.org. Would you back Johnson? Can Australia manage if one of their three seamers is off key throughout the match?

10:33am: There's some sunshine at last. The roller is trundling up and down the pitch, there are players on the field practicing their pick-up and throws or bowling (Onions and Flintoff turning their arm over for England).

All looks set fair for an on time 11am start. Told you so... you never doubted it, did you?

10:10am: Digested our Day 1 analysis; already copped a looked at the scorecard (61 KB) - still hungry for more?

Lords.org commentary icon - play stopped by rain9:42am: Bad news... it's raining. The covers are on and the umbrellas are up. Fortunately it looks like only a passing shower. With more than an hour until the scheduled start I'm still hopeful of a prompt first ball today.

Head Groundsman Mick Hunt has just popped up here to the Investec Media Centre to take in the bird's eye view of the Ground - he wants to see the incoming cloud. Mick didn't look entirely unhappy with what he saw - there is some blue sky in the distance over the Pavilion. Fingers crossed.

For those worried about the weather for today - fear not. The covers are off, Head Groundsman Mick Hunt is running the mower over the pitch and all looks good for a scheduled start at 11am.

Over the noisy engine of a chugging roller I had a chat with Mick's deputy, the man known only as 'Morg' in these parts. To every question about weather, the pitch all I got was a thumbs up and a grin - good news.
