England squad announced
Date released: 29 April 2009
The ECB have announced the 12-man squad for the first Test against the West Indies at Lord's, starting on 6 May. There is no place for either Michael Vaughan or Ian Bell.
England squad
| Player | County |
|---|---|
* Andrew Strauss | Middlesex |
James Anderson | Lancashire |
Ravi Bopara | Essex |
Tim Bresnan | Yorkshire |
Stuart Broad | Nottinghamshire |
Paul Collingwood | Durham |
Alastair Cook | Essex |
Graham Onions | Durham |
Monty Panesar | Northamptonshire |
Kevin Pietersen | Hampshire |
† Matt Prior | Sussex |
Graeme Swann | Nottinghamshire |
* - denotes captain
† - denotes wicketkeeper
Vaughan and Bell had been expected to contest the number three batting position but their exclusion and that of Middlesex's Owais Shah would seem to indicate that Ravi Bopara will fill that position.

Bresnan: Performed well at Lord's in curtain-raising match Newly appointed as permanent Team Director, Andy Flower has also included two uncapped bowlers: Graham Onions and Tim Bresnan.
Bresnan was a late call-up to the MCC team to face Champion County Durham on the opening day of the English cricket season at Lord's. His elevation from there to Test squad comes as a surprise.
