Vaughan and Bell had been expected to contest the number three batting position but their exclusion and that of Middlesex's Owais Shah would seem to indicate that Ravi Bopara will fill that position.

Newly appointed as permanent Team Director, Andy Flower has also included two uncapped bowlers: Graham Onions and Tim Bresnan.

Bresnan was a late call-up to the MCC team to face Champion County Durham on the opening day of the English cricket season at Lord's. His elevation from there to Test squad comes as a surprise.
