Finn's debut Test win

First caps: Carberry & Finn
Lords.org columnist, Steve Finn, ended his first Test on the winning side as England beat Bangladesh by 181 runs in Chittagong.

As reported on Lords.org Finn, who writes a series of exclusive columns for this website, forced his way into the Test team with a number of impressive performances for the England Lions and in warm-up matches.

On a flat, drying pitch which favoured spinners and batsmen, Finn put in an exceptional effort - bowling with hostility and pace, consistently troubling the Bangladesh batsmen.

Finn's maiden Test wicket was Shahadat Hossain, caught by Paul Collingwood.

In 14 first innings overs Finn returned five maidens, taking 1-48 as Bangladesh were all for 296.

With a large lead, England pressed for victory, but the energy-sapping heat was taking it's toll.

Finn dismissed opener Imrul Kayes in Bangladesh's second innings; bowling 18 frugal overs, including seven maidens, taking 1-47 to give him match figures of 2-95.

England's off-spinner Graeme Swann was, once again, the star for England. The Nottinghamshire off-spinner took five wickets in each innings to end with match figures of 10-217.

England now move on to Mirpur for the second Test of this two-Test Series, which starts on Saturday 20 March.

Finn will be hoping to retain his place in the Test side but can surely have done his claims no harm with an impressively mature Test debut.

Later, in May, England head to the Caribbean for the ICC World Twenty20. Finn has already been named in the provisional 30-man squad but was largely considered to be an outsider for the final 15-man squad which is confirmed on 30 March.

Bowling with control and aggression in tough, hot conditions, under the noses of the England coaching staff may have furthered Finn's claims for a place in the squad for that format too.

Links to Lord's

There was another player with links to Lord's performing well in Chittagong.

Bangladesh all-rounder, Mahmadullah, is a former MCC Young Cricketer (YC).

As England compiled a massive 599 in the first innings it was the spinner who dismissed England's captain Alastair Cook as he chased a double century.

On the first day of the Test Mahmadullah had also removed another England debutant, Michael Carberry.

With first innings figures of 2-78, Mahmadullah was Bangladesh's best bowler in a tricky situation.

Mahmuduallah then performed well with the bat too, scoring a 64-ball 51 in Bangladesh's first innings.

Cook may not relish facing him again in Mirpur after he succumbed to Mahmadullah's off-spin again in the second innings.

If both players retain their places they could be facing up to one another in familiar surroundings later this year.

Bangladesh visit Lord's for the first Test of the English summer. With Finn enrolled at Middlesex and Mahmadullah returning to the scene of his 'YC' schooling they'll both be familiar with the famous Lord's slope!
