Chairman of MCCs Cricket committee, Ted Dexter
Gilchrist praised for a fine example of good sportsmanship
Date released: 19 March 2003
Ted Dexter has congratulated Adam Gilchrist for "a fine example of good sportsmanship" during the ICC Cricket World Cup.
The Chairman of MCC's Cricket committee was commenting after Adam Gilchrist's decision to 'walk' in the World Cup semi-final against Sri Lanka - even though the umpire had ruled in his favour.
Ted Dexter (right) continued: "On behalf of MCC and all supporters of the new 'Spirit of Cricket' message, I take off my hat to Adam Gilchrist for his admirable sporting gesture. Tens of thousands of aspiring young cricketers will have seen his act of sportsmanship, and the game will be better for it."
Dexter, a former England captain, played a key role in ensuring that the game's Laws now include a Preamable on the Spirit of Cricket.
