Charles Fry: MCC President
New MCC President announces Honorary Life Membership for Andy Flower and Henry Olonga
Date released: 1 October 2003
Andy Flower and Henry Olonga have become Honorary Life Members of MCC.
Announcing the news, the incoming MCC President, Charles Fry (right), whose term of office begins today (Wednesday 1st October), said: "Both the Membership committee and the main MCC Committee were unanimous in wanting to honour Andy Flower and Henry Olonga. They sacrificed their international careers, earlier this year, to take a brave and principled stand against an appalling regime. We are delighted that they accepted our offers of Honorary Life Membership. In addition, we are thrilled that Andy and Henry are keen to play for MCC sides in the future."
Honorary Life Membership of MCC is normally granted only to cricketers whose first-class careers have ended. However, MCC hopes that changes within Zimbabwe may enable either player, if he so chooses, to resume his international career.
