Royal Navy v The Army: preview

Date released: 30 July 2009

The Royal Navy take on The Army on the main Ground at Lord's on Thursday 6 August - in a match that will help raise funds for the Help for Heroes charity.

Action from last year's centenary fixture
The two sides brought their annual cricket fixture to The Home of Cricket last year, to celebrate the centenary of the match.

It proved hugely popular with both the Forces and the public in a well attended and closely contested match ending, fittingly, in a draw.

The two teams return to Lord's in 2009 on Thursday 6 August.

The Army team will be captained by a Major and the Royal Navy by a Lieutenant Commander (see the full squads, left).

Collections will take place around the Ground for the Help for Heroes charity, which raises money for the wounded who return from war.

Furthermore, £1 from every match programme sold (costing £3) will go directly to the charity.

Follow the match online

For those wishing to follow the match but unable to make it to Lord's - MCC and the RNIB (Royal National Institute for the Blind)'s team of volunteers will be providing ball-by-ball commentary.

The Minden Band of The Queen's Division perform at the Royal Navy v The Army match in 2008
It is hoped the Coldstream Guards will perform during the interval - as The Minden Band of The Queen's Division did in 2008
The commentary is available in the Ground - blind or partially sighted spectators may borrow a headset, for free, from the Head Steward's Office.

The commentary is also available online via Lords.org - perhaps supporters of either side currently overseas will listen in!
