Shanaze Reade wins MCC Young Sportswoman award

Shanaze Reade added another award to her already burgeoning collection as she was named MCC Young Sportswoman of the Year.

In March this year Reade won gold in the team sprint at the World Track Cycling Championships. Then in July she won another gold, this time at the BMX World Championionships in Canada.

The Sunday Times Sportswomen of Year Awards made its debut at Lord's this year, with MCC hosting the ceremony as well as sponsoring the Young Sportswoman award.

Strong competition

Shanaze collected her award from MCC Secretary and Chief Executive, Keith Bradshaw.

The Young Sportswoman category boasted several strong contenders. The other nominees were:

Hollie Avil, who is the World and European triathlon champion.

And Laura Collett who, earlier this year, successfully defended her junior European three-day eventing title in Switzerland.

Other winners at the award ceremony, presented by BBC Sport's Jill Douglas, were:

  • Unsung Hero Award: Cherry Alexander (UK Athletics)
  • Helen Rollason Award for Inspiration: Joanna Gardiner (Football for Peace)
  • The Champions Award: Nicole Arthur (water-skiing)
  • University Sporting Archievment: Jessica Ennis (heptathlete)
  • PE Teacher of the Year: Helen Finbow (Woodhey High School)
  • Overseas Sportswoman: Carolina Kluft (heptathlete)

The headline prize winner of The Sunday Times Sportswoman of the Year award was Victoria Pendleton - the triple World Track Cycling World Champion.
