Six of the best: GB archers for Lord's

Date released: 2 August 2007

Great Britain will be represented by six of its best archers on Monday morning, during the first-ever international archery tournament - sponsored by npower - at Lord's.

The British archers will include Alison Williamson (35) - the bronze medallist in 2004's Olympic Games in Athens - and Larry Godfrey, the winner of 2005's European Grand Prix in Sopot (Poland).

In Great Britain's women's side, Alison's team-mates will be Naomi Folkard (23), the runner-up in last year's Commonwealth Archery Championships in New Delhi, and the highly promising Charlotte Burgess (20) who came fifth in the same event.

In the men's team, Larry (31) will be joined by Alan Wills (27) and Simon Terry (33), who both performed well in last month's World Outdoor Target Archery Championships in Leipzig - where Alan edged out Simon in the battle for the bronze medal.

Britain's representatives will be competing against similarly strong sides from India and China.

Looking ahead to the contest - The npower International Archery Challenge, for The MCC Cup - Alison Williamson said: "It'll be a real privilege to compete in the first-ever international archery tournament at Lord's - one of the world's most celebrated sporting venues. It's also a great chance for everyone to gain some invaluable experience at the ground which will host the Olympic archery contest in 2012."

Similarly, Larry Godfrey said: "Like all my team-mates, I'm really looking forward to competing at Lord's. It will give us all some great experience as we start to plan for the London Olympics, which are now less than five years away."

Monday's tournament has been organised by MCC in conjunction with the Grand National Archery Society, with strong support from archery's international governing body (FITA) and London 2012. Indeed, the guests at Lord's on Monday will include David Luckes - Head of Sport Competition at London 2012.

There will be free admission to Lord's for The npower International Archery Challenge. The archers' practice session will begin at 9.30am; the tournament itself will last from 10.00am to noon. (As it will take place over 70 metres, spectators are urged to bring binoculars with them.)
