Watch: MCC Spirit of Cricket in Afghanistan
Date released: 30 July 2009

Fleming in an Afghan classroom Former England all-rounder and former army officer Matthew Fleming travelled to Afghanistan earlier this season to check on the progress being made in grassroots cricket and see MCC’s part in that process.
Since 2006, MCC has played an active role in trying to develop the game in Afghanistan.

Fleming helps out with some coaching advice Now, in partnership with the charity Afghan Connection, MCC has financed the building of three concrete wickets in schools in the North and East of Afghanistan (with more to come) and ran a three-day MCC Spirit of Cricket coaching camp in Jalabad for 150 young cricketers.
In the last two years, the Afghanistan national team has become a symbol of hope for its people.
Hailing from the dusty refugee camps of Pakistan, where families sought refuge from the years of war, Afghanistan’s cricketers have returned to their country and shown a determination to climb the world rankings, gaining ICC One Day International status in the process.
The Afghan national team joined Matthew Fleming at the MCC Spirit of Cricket camp to help inspire the cricketing dreams of a new generation.
Afghan Connection filmed this camp and related cricket projects. Watch the film
