  • Before playing the video, ask the class ‘What is the role of the captain?’ and discuss the question
  • Play the video ‘Respect your captain’ and ask the children how it would feel to lead the England team out as in the opening video? This could be extended into a short story, poem, storyboard etc.
  • Revisit the role of the captain. What skills do they need? Ask for examples of good captains / leaders?
  • How can the team players help the captain?
  • Make a list of adjectives to describe how a captain may feel, using the example of ‘lonely’ from the video

  • It is important that all of the individual skills are geared towards the team success above all. Everything as an individual contributes to the team
  • Captaincy is a massive responsibility and they set the tone for the team to play the game in the right way, but they need the team behind them for this to work. Respect is a two way process
  • The captain has to try to get the best out of every individual
  • Captains need to take the responsibility to stick to the Spirit of Cricket, but individual players must also play their part in this and not pass the sole responsibility to the captain
  • Team players should be watching and listening to the captain at all times and helping to carry out what the captain would like done
