Profile: Dave Richardson

Former South African wicket-keeper Dave Richardson became a member of MCC’s World Cricket Committee in January 2009.

In April 1992 Richardson played in South Africa’s first Test after the Proteas’ 22-year isolation due to apartheid and was a fixture behind the stumps for six years until his retirement in 1998. He had kept wicket in 42 of South Africa’s first 43 Tests after their return from exile.

He scored his only Test century – 109 – against New Zealand in Cape Town and, overall, averaged just over 24 with the bat. He took 150 catches and made two stumpings in Tests, as well as 148 catches and 17 stumpings in One Day Internationals.

A qualified lawyer, Richardson worked as a Business Director with Octagon SA - the company which negotiates South African players’ contracts with their board - as well as a media commentator after his playing career ended.

LIke father like son: Richardson's son, Michael and MCC 'YC' In 2002 he became the International Cricket Council’s (ICC) first General Manager of Cricket and is now one of the foremost administrators in the game.

Richardson was elected an Honorary Life Member of MCC in the same year and has developed close links with the Club ever since. He sat on the World Cricket Committee as an ICC observer since its inception in 2006 and in October 2008 joined the MCC Laws sub-committee.

In a nice twist of cricketing fate, Richardson’s son Michael – also a wicket-keeper – joined the MCC staff as a Young Cricketer during the 2008 season and signed a contract with Durham in 2009.
