Howzart! competition

In order to commemorate the Bicentenary of Lord’s Cricket ground, MCC in partnership with acclaimed artist Darren Baker invited local schools to take part in the Howzart! competition.

Over 500 pupils were given the brief to design a piece of artwork celebrating the Bicentenary of Lord’s.

The students took part in a series of workshops and tours of Lord’s delivered by MCC staff and school assemblies and lessons lead by Darren Baker.

Here the budding artists were asked to create pieces based on:

  • The Architecture
  • Fashion and Textiles
  • The Laws, equipment and technology
  • The People
  • The Pitch

The judging panel incorporated two members of the MCC Arts and Library committee alongside Darren Baker. They had the tough job of selecting the top 20 pieces to be incorporated into a mural designed by Darren Baker and featuring some of his work.

BakerDarren Baker said: "It has been a great honour to create this mural for MCC. The whole project has been a terrific experience and one that is close to my heart, in terms of working with and inspiring the next generation and providing opportunities.

"It was amazing to work with such a famous sporting institution and local schools, the feedback and goodwill generated has been fantastic. I hope this energy and positivity is reflected in the mural."

WinnerDerek Brewer, MCC Chief Executive and Secretary, said: "Everyone at the club had a fantastic day on 5th July and the unveiling of the Howzart! mural was the icing on the cake of the Lord’s bicentenary celebrations.

"MCC is working very hard to continue developing its links with the local community through initiatives like Howzart!, and the amount of interest we had from local youngsters was very encouraging.

"It’s now a permanent fixture on the Compton Stand so supporters young and old will be able to enjoy it for years to come."
