Roland-Jones opens with six

Toby Roland-Jones took career best figures of 6/63 as Middlesex recovered from a slow start to bowl Nottinghamshire out for 278 on the opening day of the season at Trent Bridge.

Roland-Jones, who spent some of the winter with England's Performance Programme, outshone new signing James Harris and Ireland international Tim Murtagh as the visitors fought back from a sluggish start after winning the toss.

The seamer took the first four wickets of the innings to restrain Notts' top order which had threatened to post a total of more than 300 - an imposing score on a responsive early-season pitch - with Murtagh in particular proving expensive as the hosts reached 158/3.

Australia opener Ed Cowan showed impressive resolve prior to lunch but was dismissed shortly afterwards for 61, while James Taylor and Samit Patel briefly threatened to put Notts firmly in the driving seat.

But Leeds/Bradford MCC University graduate Roland-Jones bowled with impeccable control throughout the day after being introduced as first-change, and was rewarded with his eighth first-class, five-wicket haul when he dismissed Notts debutant Ajmal Shahzad.

Murtagh recovered to claim a couple of late wickets with the second new ball, there was one for Neil Dexter's part time seamers and Harris remained economical if not as threatening on his first day at his new club.

The day belonged to Roland-Jones though, who ended the innings when he tempted ex-England wicket-keeper Chris Read into a top-edged hook, ensuring that his wicket-haul was comprised entirely of former or current international cricketers.

Sam Robson then struck three boundaries as Middlesex survived to reach 12/0 in a tricky two-over spell at the death
