A photograph of Sachin Tendulkar in his final Test appearance in Mumbai has been named the 2013 MCC – Wisden Photo of the Year.

The image, taken by Mid-Day Media photographer Atul Kamble, shows Tendulkar about to walk out for his last innings in the second Test match against West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium in November.

Tendulkar’s final series was hotly anticipated and the winning picture shows fans clamouring to get a glimpse of him before his last innings.

The judging panel, made up of Chris Smith, Patrick Eagar, Nigel Davies, Eileen Langsley and Hugh Routledge chose Kamble’s image from a shortlist of 11 after choosing from nearly 500 entries submitted by both professional and amateur photographers from around the world.

The standard of photographs this year was fantastic

The panel also named two runners up. South African Shaun Roy, a professional photographer, captured the moment Royal Challengers Bangalore captain Virat Kohli was hit in the face as he dropped a catch in the Indian Premier League match against Kings XI Punjab.

Md. Khalid Rayhan Shawon, an amateur photographer from Bangladesh, was the second runner-up after impressing the judges with his image of children playing cricket under the Shahjalal International Airport flight path in Dhaka.

The winner and two runners up are featured in the colour photo section of the Wisden Cricketers’ Almanack, and the eleven shortlisted photos will be displayed at Lord’s this season.

First prize is £1,000, both runners up are awarded £750 each and the other eight shortlisted entrants £150.

How we picked Sachin Tendulkar

Chris Smith, Chief Sports Photographer at The Sunday Times and Chair of the Judging Panel, said: "The standard of photographs this year was very high as usual and it was a pleasure to look through them all with my fellow judges. In the end the sheer sense of occasion that the winning image captured won us over, and I would like to thoroughly congratulate Atul on winning the competition.

"This competition is crucial in encouraging both amateur and professional sports photographers to push themselves to new limits and it’s thanks to MCC, Wisden and 21Six that they are given the chance to showcase their talents in this way."

Rick Ankers, Managing Director of 21Six said: "We are very proud to support such a prestigious competition. We love cricket, and we share a passion for original creativity and outstanding imagery, which is what we have seen in this year’s competition."

Adam Chadwick, MCC Curators of Collection, said: "The MCC – Wisden Photograph of the Year is an extremely coveted award and we are delighted with the standard of images we have seen in the 2013 competition.

"I am looking forward to seeing the shortlisted photos adorning the walls of the Lord’s Museum, and I would encourage anyone with an interest in photography and cricket to look to enter an image this year."
