Home Porterfield to lead Combined Associates
Former MCC Young Cricketer William Porterfield has been named as captain of an Combined Associate & Affiliate side to play England in the UAE.
Ireland captain Porterfield is joined by fellow ex-YCs, Afghanistan internationals Mohammad Nabi and Hamid Hassan, in a 12-man squad selected from teams playing in the ICC Intercontinental Cup.
Five nations - Ireland, Scotland, Namibia, Afghanistan and UAE are represented in the squad.
The three-day match, to be played at the ICC Global Cricket Academy in Dubai from 7-9 January, will be England's first of two first-class warm-up fixtures in the UAE ahead of their Test series with Pakistan which starts on 17 January.
Porterfield, 27, has played 56 ODIs and 17 T20Is for his country since making his international debut in 2006.
The Londonderry-born left-hander has also carved a career in English county cricket, initially with Gloucestershire and now with Warwickshire, where he was a regular in 2011.
Porterfield described his appointment as an honour, as well as his excitement at taking on the number one side in Test cricket.
"It will be a great honour for me to lead out the Associate and Affiliate team against the number one team in the longer format of the game," he said.
"If you look through their squad they are full of world class cricketers and it will be a great test for us against whatever eleven they put out.
"Another challenge we face is coming together as a group ourselves, we have played against each other a few times but we will have to gel pretty quickly in the few days’ preparation we have in order to put in a good performance.
"As this is such a great chance for all the individuals to showcase their talent against the number one Test team in the world, I do not see this being an issue at all."
Hassan and Nabi are two of three Afghan players in the squad, alongside wicket-keeper batsman Mohammad Shahzad.
The pair spent time as YCs after making an impression against MCC in a match in 2006.
Fast bowler Hassan played a staring role for MCC as they beat Nottinghamshire in the Champion County fixture in Abu Dhabi earlier this year.
