Home MCC jet-off to Cyprus
Joe Root's father Matthew Root is leading a fifteen-man MCC touring party which departed from Lord’s yesterday evening for a ten day tour to Limassol, Cyprus.
It is the fourth and penultimate overseas tour for the Club in 2013, and encompasses three 50 over matches alongside two Twenty20 fixtures against a mix of opposition, including a clash against the Cypriot national side on Saturday (28 September).
Sheffield Collegiate Cricket Club’s Root will control proceedings on the field for the Club. He captains a diverse side, which comprises of MCC Playing Members from across the country.
MCC have embarked on one previous tour to Cyprus, six years ago in October 2007. On that occasion the Club played and won three limited overs fixtures, including a four run victory against the national team.
Speaking about the 2013 tour to Cyprus, MCC Head of Cricket, John Stephenson, spoke of his hope that the tour would further enhance the game in the country.
He said: "When MCC first toured Cyprus in 2007, the national side had only just made its first appearance in Division 4 of the ICC European Cricket Championships.
"Since then the Cyprus Cricket Association has done a wonderful job developing the game across the nation, and it is particularly encouraging to see the growth that is happening at a grassroots level.
"There appears to be a real passion for cricket in Cyprus, and I hope that MCC’s visit will help to further increase the game’s appeal there and generate further interest in the sport."
In that match former England Captain and MCC President designate, Mike Gatting, struck a powerful 44 to help lead the way for the Club.
The destination of MCC overseas tours is constantly under discussion, with criteria ultimately focussing on where the Club can assist with the development of the game and spread the MCC Spirit of Cricket message to a new audience.
Cyprus has been carefully identified as an area which will currently benefit from an MCC tour, and during the ten days MCC aims to help with the ongoing expansion of cricket across the nation, which was granted Affiliate Membership of the ICC in 1999.
