Clive Lloyd to deliver Cowdrey Lecture at Lord's

Date released: 14 April 2004

Clive Lloyd will deliver the 2004 Cowdrey Lecture at Lord's on Monday 19th July.

The former West Indies captain and batsman (right) will become the fourth Cowdrey Lecturer, following in the footsteps of Richie Benaud (2001), Barry Richards (2002) and Sunil Gavaskar (last year).

Clive Lloyd played in 87 one-day internationals and 110 Test matches for the West Indies, becoming the first West Indian to win 100 Test caps. He enjoyed an impressive record as captain, including a run of 26 Tests without defeat and eleven successive wins.

He was named a Wisden Cricketer of the Year in 1971 after a particularly successful season with Lancashire, and led the West Indies to victory in the World Cup Final at Lord's in 1979. He retired from playing international cricket in 1985, and is now a respected match referee.

MCC's Head of Cricket, Tony Dodemaide, said: "We are delighted that Clive Lloyd has agreed to deliver the 2004 Cowdrey Lecture, following the previous distinguished Lecturers - Messrs Benaud, Richards and Gavaskar. Clive has vast experience as both a top-flight player and an international match referee. I am sure this will enable him to provide his audience with a unique insight into the way in which the game is, and should, be played."
