MCC Young Cricketer Georgia Elwiss has been called into the England squad for the NatWest Women’s Quadrangular Series 50-over tournament.

The all-rounder, who is currently in her second summer as a YC, replaces Jenny Gunn who has suffered a back injury.

Uncapped Elwiss, 20, joins YC teammates Sarah Taylor, Heather Knight, Fran Wilson and Danni Wyatt in the England squad.

Current MCC Universities student Holly Colvin and ex-MCCU Laura Marsh are also part of the squad.

England play Australia at Lord’s on Tuesday 5 July.

Big chance

Dani Wyatt: Elwiss' team-mate at MCC and now England
Elwiss, a fast-medium bowler and middle-order batsman joined MCC’s YC scheme in 2010.

Her cricket has improved hugely having been given the opportunity to train full-time under MCC Women’s Coach Alan Duncan.

After a stint in Australia playing for ACT Women last winter, Elwiss has been in good form during the English summer.

She was named as a reserve for the Twenty20 Quadrangular tournament, which England won and now has the opportunity to impress on the international stage.

The Wolverhampton-born player has also tasted international opposition in 2011 - playing against all three of England’s Quadrangular opponents for the ECB Academy prior to the Twenty20 series.

'Dream job'

A delighted Elwiss said she was looking forward to joining her team-mates ahead of the tournament:

“It’s great that there are quite a few YCs up there with England already. We’ve got a great team spirit down here so I’m looking forward to taking it into the England set-up.

“I’m very excited and nervous as well and just preparing myself really.

“I knew I was close to the squad and if any injuries went down then I’d be next in line but it was a bit of a shock still to get in there.

“I love being at Lord’s, you can’t beat it - dream job. It’s been really good for me being here and training full-time.”
