International hat-trick by MCC Young Cricketers

Date released: 23 June 2004

The MCC Young Cricketers programme has achieved an impressive international hat-trick, as each of the squads contesting this summer's NatWest Series matches - England, New Zealand and the West Indies - contains a current or former MCC Young Cricketer.

Rikki Clarke was yesterday named in England's squad, while Hamish Marshall and Darren Sammy had previously been selected by New Zealand and the West Indies, respectively.

Hamish Marshall 'graduated' as a Young Cricketer in 1998; Rikki Clarke spent two years (1999 and 2000) with MCC; and Darren Sammy is currently in his second year as a Young Cricketer.

MCC's Head of Cricket, John Stephenson, said: "I'm delighted that our past and present Young Cricketers are receiving international recognition. Their selection shows the quality of the coaching they've received from Clive Radley, our Head Coach, and his colleagues. It's great to see MCC's investment in young talent paying off."

Past MCC Young Cricketers include Ian Botham, Martin Crowe and Mark Waugh.

Other MCC initiatives to identify and promote emerging talent include its Easter Coaching Classes and the annual MCC School of Merit.
