MCC marks Alec Stewart's last Lord's Test
Date released: 31 July 2003
MCC has marked the last Lord's Test of Alec Stewart - the former England captain, and the country's most-capped Test cricketer - by placing his portrait in the Long Room.
Indeed, Alec Stewart went past his own portrait as he walked to the wicket during the first morning of the current npower Test between England and South Africa.
Although no definitive records have been kept, it is believed that few, if any, players have had this honour since the great W.G.Grace.
The portrait of Alec Stewart, by Andy Pankhurst, had previously been on display in the MCC Museum at Lord's, having been commissioned by MCC to celebrate Alec Stewart's 100th Test.
Andy Pankhurst subsequently became MCC's Young Artist; an exhibition of his work, including another painting of Alec Stewart, is currently being staged in the Writing Room at Lord's.
