MCC Young Cricketer selected by West Indies

Date released: 22 May 2004

An MCC Young Cricketer, Darren Sammy, has been named in the West Indies' squad for this summer's NatWest Series one-day internationals - which will culminate in the NatWest Series Final at Lord's on Saturday 10th July.

Commenting on his selection, Darren said: "I'm absolutely delighted. It's a great opportunity and a huge honour. Now I need to keep working hard, over the coming weeks, so that I can get a chance to move from the squad into the team. It would be great to play against either England or New Zealand, and it would be brilliant if we could get through to the Final at Lord's - which is a simply amazing place to play."

Darren joined the MCC Young Cricketers scheme at the start of the 2003 season, and proceeded to average 38 with the bat and 26 with the ball. In March this year, he played against England in the Caribbean - representing the West Indies Vice-Chancellor's XI.

Recent 'graduates' of the MCC Young Cricketers scheme include Rikki Clarke (the England all-rounder), Alex Gidman (captain of England 'A') and Chad Keegan (of Middlesex), while past 'graduates' include England's Ian Botham and Australia's Mark Waugh.
