England v Australia | Day 2

Posted: 15 August 2019

Australia bowled England out at Lord’s as the second Specsavers Test Match of the Ashes Series got underway in front of a full house decked in red in support of the Ruth Strauss Foundation.

After a washout on day one, England were inserted by Australia, who won the toss and then bowled out their hosts for 258. Pat Cummins, Josh Hazlewood and Nathon Lyon claimed three wickets apiece, with Lyon’s final scalp of the innings bringing his total Test tally to 355 – level with Dennis Lillee in third place on the all-time list of Australian wicket-takers.Despite the early loss of Jason Roy (0) and skipper Joe Root (14), England looked well set with Rory Burns (53) and Joe Denly (30) putting on 66 for the third wicket. The later partnerships never materialised, though, and despite a battling 52 from Jonny Bairstow, England were dismissed for 258.

That left Australia some tricky late overs to negotiate in the evening session, particularly with debutant Jofra Archer bowling at a scintillating pace. The Australian batsmen treated him with caution, but it was opening partner Stuart Broad who claimed the wicket of David Warner with a beauty that nipped back, as the tourists ended the day on 30 for 1, trailing England by 228 to set up an enthralling prospect as the match approaches its midpoint on day three.

The match resumes at 11am on Friday 16th August. Days 3-5 of the Test match are sold out.
