Gough and Hoddle join Young Cricketers Published: 28 February 2012

MCC Head Coach Mark Alleyne has named a 19-man MCC Young Cricketers squad for 2012, which includes Liam Gough, the son of former England fast bowler Darren.

Also included in the squad is Jamie Hoddle, the son of ex-England football player and manager Glenn and Billy Root, brother of Yorkshire and England Lions opener Joe.

The squad, who will compete in the South Division of the ECB's Second XI competitions, includes six returning players, eight new signings and three overseas players.

Henry Nicholls from New Zealand and Australian pair Ben Dougall and Alex Ross will be among those based at Lord's this summer.

Pedigree

The 2012 squad will be aiming to launch their professional careers and follow in the footsteps of recent YC graduates who include current international captains Ross Taylor (New Zealand) and Darren Sammy (West Indies).

Gough and Hoddle will be following a different route to the top than their famous fathers though.

The former is a top-order batsman as opposed to a fast-bowler while Hoddle jnr. is a bowling all-rounder rather than a stylish midfielder.

Also among the new recruits is Dipayan Paul who was selected for the squad having impressed Alleyne during the Wisden City Cup (WCC) in 2011.

Overseas talent

Batsman Nicholls, who has already represented Canterbury at first-class level, makes his way to Lord's on the recommendation of former Australia coach John Buchanan - the latest player to benefit from MCC's longstanding relationship with the New Zealand Cricket Board.

Australian pair Dougall and Ross meanwhile will link up with the programme as part of a reciprocal arrangement between MCC and the Darren Lehman Cricket Academy (opens in a new window) in South Australia.

This winter, returning YC Jamie Porter spent time with the DLCA and will be hoping his experience in Australia can help him improve on a strong first season, where the fast bowler took 21 wickets.

Also embarking on a second full season at Lord’s is Buckinghamshire bowler Tom Hampton, who will be joined this year by his younger brother, Dan Hampton, who is a batting all-rounder.

Ex-England all-rounder Alleyne spoke of his delight at the make-up of his latest squad.

He said: "The main aim for all the players this summer is sustainability and consistency. All of the guys are very talented young cricketers, and they are all capable of putting in special performances – but the key is to be able to play well on a regular basis.

"My task therefore is to make sure that everyone is constantly accumulating “little wins” and aspiring for excellence in everything that they do."
