Eoin Morgan made a golden duck as Middlesex's LV= County Championship campaign got off to a stuttering start on the opening day against Sussex in Hove.

Full scorecard (Cricinfo)

The England batsman, who declined an IPL contract as part of his bid to try and force his way back into the Test team, was clean bowled by veteran seamer Jon Lewis, who led the attack superbly with 4/34 on Sussex debut.

The 38-year-old evergreen swing bowler was ably supported by fellow veteran seamer Steve Magoffin, whose 3/21 included Australia opener Chris Rogers.

Sam Robson, tipped by many to be the next England opener, was one of only three batsmen to reach double-figures on a seam friendly pitch, with Dawid Malan top scoring with 35 and tail-ender Toby Roland-Jones making 17.

The wickets continued to tumble in Sussex's response, with Tim Murtagh (2/35) and James Harris (1/14) reducing the hosts to 42/3.

Matt Prior - another playing for his England place after being left out of the final two Tests in Australia this winter - played a typical counter-attacking innings though, striking seven fours in a 37-ball unbeaten 32.

He was ably supported by youngster Matt Machan, who was 21 not out at the close in a partnership of 44.

Steven Finn's return to competitve cricket was a quiet one - the fast bowler sent down four overs for 20 after coming on first-change.

No play was possible on Day Two at Hove due to inclement weather.
