Middlesex take on an in-form Yorkshire, including a fit again Joe Root, for a crucial LV= County Championship clash starting at Lord's on Sunday 27 April - with both sides hopeful of reasserting their title challenge.

Yorkshire completed a crushing innings victory over relegation favourites Northamptonshire on Wednesday, with new England batsman Gary Ballance making an impressive 174 and seamer Jack Brooks collecting career-best figures of 8/112.

It reinforced their status as one of the title favourites, despite missing England pair Root and Jonny Bairstow through separate hand injuries.

Ballance in particular has made a fine start to the summer as he pushes his claim for a place in the England middle order for the first Test of the summer against Sri Lanka at Lord's in June - his century was on the back of 77 against Somerset.

Middlesex meanwhile will have enjoyed their ten days off since completing a thumping ten-wicket victory over Nottinghamshire at Lord's earlier this month.

A humbling reverse by Sussex in the opening round of fixtures had highlighted a potential weakness in the middle-order, but John Simpson's first century in three years went some way to allaying those fears.

And with a rejuvenated Steven Finn fit and firing and among the most dangerous bowlers in the county game, Angus Fraser's side will be confident of announcing themselves as contenders with a strong performance against the White Rose county.
