MCC has expressed its sadness upon hearing of the death of former Club President and England international Doug Insole CBE at the age of 91.
Insole represented Essex and Cambridge University during a 22-year first-class career, scoring 25,241 runs in 450 matches.
He represented England on nine occasions, scoring one century, against South Africa in Durban in 1957.
Insole served cricket with distinction following his retirement, spending 20 years on the MCC Committee and 19 years as an England selector.
Known affectionately in Chelmsford as Mr Essex, he also served as Chairman and President of Essex County Cricket Club.
Incumbent MCC President Matthew Fleming said: "When you are privileged to take office as President of M.C.C., you look at Past Presidents with awe, and none more so than Doug Insole.
"His contribution to cricket around the country and especially his beloved Essex has been immense.
"He will be very sorely missed by so many”.
The MCC Flag at Lord's was lowered to half-mast during day one of the Specsavers County Championship match between Middlesex and Warwickshire as a mark of respect.
