In the second edition of the MCC in China & Hong Kong blog, Anthony Wilkinson details four successful victories for MCC in the delights of Hong Kong.
Leaving behind our new friends in Shanghai, the MCC Tour Party arrived in Hong Kong to be greeted by the colourful sights and sounds of Wan Chai.
Another evening sampling the local culture was followed by a steaming hot day at the Hong Kong Cricket Club, as MCC face HKCC XI. Alexis Twigg set up the innings with an elegant 88, before taking a well-earned rest as the MCC side successfully defending 330 in the afternoon sun.
Tuesday brought more surprises. A T20 victory against Kowloon Cricket Club, with Steve Snell smashing a 40-ball hundred, was followed by a reception at Craigengower Cricket Club and the touring party were greeted in harmonious fashion in the form of a bagpipe player. The hospitality was again superb, which preceded a night mixing with the locals.
The game against the HK Dragons was the toughest test the MCC side had yet faced, but another fine knock of 60 from Snell gave the club a useful score to defend and tight spells from Hassan Khan, Ed Wharton and Jonny Fawcett - who cleaned up with 4 for 17 - kept the side's win record intact.
Another victory, this time against Craigengower, provided the warm-up for an evening at the Happy Valley Races, where the tour’s win ratio took a severe hit. Luckily the squad's unbeaten record on the pitch remains intact and all are looking forward to a very competitive final fixture against HKCC.
