Young MCC cricketers take on county pros in the UAE

  • MCC Young Cricketers to play against Sussex CCC and a combined MCC Universities side to take on Lancashire CCC during an eleven day pre-season tour to Abu Dhabi and Dubai

Thirty talented young cricketers will represent MCC on an eleven day pre-season training camp in the UAE from the 14th – 25th March.  It will be the third year that a joint tour to Abu Dhabi and Dubai has been delivered for the MCC Young Cricketers (YCs) and a combined MCC Universities (MCCU) side, following the success of the inaugural tour in 2011.

In addition to training in the world class facilities available at the Zayed International Cricket Stadium, the YCs and MCCU players will get the opportunity to test their skills against professional county opposition.  Mark Alleyne’s MCC YCs team will take on Sussex CCC in a 40 over clash in Abu Dhabi, while the MCCU side will play against Lancashire CCC in a 40 over match at 7he Sevens Cricket Ground in Dubai.  Both sides will also compete against each other in a mix of multi-day, forty over and Twenty20 cricket during the eleven day tour.

Commenting on the international pre-season training camp, MCC Head of Cricket, John Stephenson, said:

“MCC is delighted that it can continue to support the development of young cricket talent, by delivering the third successive pre-season training tour to the UAE for the MCC YCs and combined MCCU side.  The format has proven to be very successful in previous years, and I know that there is a real sense of excitement amongst both squads ahead of the trip.  The opportunity to play cricket overseas and in different conditions is essential early-on in a player’s career, so this tour provides a perfect opportunity for 30 talented young players to gain valuable experience.”

Speaking about the tour, MCC Head Coach, and former Gloucestershire and England cricketer, Mark Alleyne, said:

“There has been a lot of anticipation in both the MCC YCs and MCCU camps in the build up to this tour.  It is a superb opportunity for all the players to get out into the middle and play some hard cricket ahead of the domestic season in England, and the fixtures against Lancashire and Sussex in particular will provide a tough challenge.”

The MCCU combined side was selected from the six MCCU centres, and was chosen by former England Test match batsman, Clive Radley, based on performances during the 2012 season.

Notes to editors:

MCC has financially supported and administrated six university cricket academies in England and Wales through the MCC Universities (MCCUs) programme since 2005.  The MCCUs aim to give promising young players the opportunity to receive top-level coaching and playing opportunities whilst furthering their education.

The MCC Young Cricketers are a squad of cricketers selected every year.  In offering world-class facilities and top coaching at Lord’s, MCC aims to develop their cricket and turn them into First Class professionals.  The team competes in the north division of the ECB Second Eleven Championship, Trophy and Twenty20 competitions, in addition to playing a variety of other fixtures.

The Zayed International Cricket Stadium is the home of Abu Dhabi CC, who in late 2009 signed an agreement with MCC to become Associate Club partners.

During February and March, MCC sides in four different guises will represent the Club in the UAE as part of a wider MCC Spirit of Cricket Festival: at the end of February an MCC U19 Women’s team was selected for the first time in the Club’s 226 year history, and won the inaugural ARCH (ARabian CHallenge) Trophy, and following the MCC YCs and MCCU combined side pre-season tour, the coveted MCC v Champion County match will take place at the Zayed International Cricket Stadium from Sunday 24th – Wednesday 27th March.
