Alastair Cook’s century for England had earlier given the hosts a score of 246/7 after 50 overs and after Tillakaratne Dilshan had been bowled by Tim Bresnan, Chandimal entered the crease with Sri Lanka 21/1 in response.
What followed was a superb display of batting with Chandimal scoring 11 fours and two sixes in his unbeaten score of 105, sharing a partnership of 112 with Mahela Jayawardene.
Chandimal’s innings lasted 196, with the batsman facing 126 balls to help Sri Lanka to victory.
