I have written today to Buckingham Palace to ask that our deepest sympathy and condolences be conveyed to His Majesty The King and other members of the Royal Family, on behalf of the MCC Committee, our Members and staff, past and present.
As a Club, we were honoured to have The Queen as our Patron as well as our monarch for the past 70 years. Her first official visit to the Ground came five years earlier, in 1947, in the company of her parents and her sister, HRH The Princess Margaret, to watch the Test match between England and South Africa. The Queen made a total of 33 official visits to our Ground, accompanied on many occasions by HRH The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh.
The MCC flag will be lowered to half-mast as we observe the period of national mourning. We will also be taking all necessary steps regarding MCC events and activities, as well as any private functions at Lord’s, in accordance with established protocol and as appropriate to the mood of the nation.
