John was the doyen of cricket writers. His lengthy and illustrious career included over three decades as Cricket Correspondent at The Times and six years as Editor of Wisden.
His service in the Committee Room at Lord’s was exceptional: three stints on the MCC Committee were supplemented by eighteen years on the Club’s Arts and Library committee, a decade on each of the Cricket and General Purposes committee and three years as an MCC Trustee. He was made an Honorary Life Vice-President of the Club in 2001.
He continued to contribute, both to The Times and to MCC publications, well into his retirement and his presence at Lord’s will be greatly missed.
His obituary will be published in next year’s Annual Report.
