MCC unveils double portrait of Sir James Anderson and Stuart Broad CBE at Lord’s

A double portrait of England's iconic bowling partnership, Sir James Anderson and Stuart Broad CBE, was unveiled in the Long Room at Lord's today, ahead of the Rothesay men's Test match between England and Pakistan. 

The portrait, painted by award-winning British portrait artist Jamie Routley RP, is the first double portrait commissioned by MCC as part of the Lord’s Portrait Programme.

The pair are the top two Test wicket takers at Lord’s, with Anderson claiming 123 in 29 matches, and Broad 113 in 28, at the Home of Cricket. Anderson features on the famous Lord’s Honours Boards no fewer than seven times, whilst Broad is on both the bowling and batting boards.

MCC wanted to celebrate the iconic bowling partnership and a sense of their relationship on and off the pitch. Depicted in their England whites, they share a focus point, demonstrating a shared vision that was key to their success.

The composition of the artwork acts as a rich narrative canvas filled with personal iconography, with Anderson’s England cap number of 613, and Broad’s number of 638, both visible in the portrait.
In a touching nod to family legacy, the sleeveless jumper worn by Broad in the portrait belonged to his father Chris, who also represented England.

Painted in April and July following extensive sittings and research, Routley’s work captures the unique psychological and tactical bond that defined the most successful fast-bowling partnership in Test cricket history.

Beyond physical likeness, Routley sought to capture the intense communication and non-verbal understanding required when "hunting wickets" together.

Jamie Routley RP, Artist, said: "I wanted to capture their character, but beyond that, I wanted to tell their story. Their partnership was built on a constant exchange of information - tactically, emotionally, and psychologically. What we see in the pose is the moment immediately after a conversation has happened. They are connected by a shared purpose and concentration."

Charlotte Goodhew, MCC Collections and Programmes Manager, who manages the Lord’s Portrait Programme added: "It is fantastic to commission the partnership of James Anderson and Stuart Broad, which defines an era of English cricket. The artist has managed to capture not just the likeness of two world-class athletes, but the deep human dynamic and quiet intensity that made their partnership so legendary.

“This painting will no doubt remind spectators of the unifying nature of playing cricket and the bonds it can inspire.”

The portrait will take its permanent place within the MCC collection at Lord's, joining historic and contemporary artwork by Justin Mortimer, Hero Johnson, Jason Brooks and Anthony Williams.
