The first of Christopher Old’s two Honours Boards appearances was earnt with a five wicket haul taken in a drawn test against New Zealand in 1973.
It was a triumph of endurance for Yorkshire-born seamer Old, who sent down almost 42 tireless overs for his 5-113 as New Zealand piled on the runs, declaring on 551/9 in reply to England’s 253.
It was then the turn of the New Zealand bowlers to toil in vain, as England accumulated a steady 463 for the loss of nine wickets, the match never really approaching a result. England won in Nottingham and Leeds to take a 2-0 series victory.
