D.V.P. Wright 10-175 v South AfricaBack to boards

Doug Wright’s only ten-wicket haul came for England vs. South Africa at Lord’s in June 1947.

In a game famous for the batting exploits of W J Edrich and D C S Compton, who put on a record partnership of 370 for the third-wicket, Wright, in one particularly successful spell of 22 balls, bowled the South African batsman Rowan, Tuckett and Mann with fizzing leg-breaks.

Having finished the first innings with figures of 5 for 95, Wright was again England’s best bowler in the second; his improved length, direction, sharp spin and lift made him always dangerous, and he obtained better figures of 5 for 80 in the second innings.

England would go on to win the match by 10 wickets.
