MCC and Cricket Hong Kong celebrate the Spirit of Cricket at Hong Kong Sixes

Posted: 2 October 2026

Cricket Hong Kong (CHK) will be celebrating the Spirit of Cricket during the Hong Kong Sixes tournament later this year, thanks to a new Pilot programme that MCC intends to utilise around the globe.

CHK will present a Spirit of Cricket Award at the culmination of the tournament to one of the participating teams that has embodied the Spirit of Cricket the most.

As Guardian of the Laws, MCC is promoting the values of the Spirit of Cricket globally as part of a Pilot scheme. By celebrating cricket in Hong Kong at the tournament, MCC hopes to help spread these values more widely across international and franchise cricket.

Having started in 1992, The Hong Kong Sixes, is a unique six-a-side international cricket tournament. It is the world’s fastest format of cricket, with each game lasting less than an hour.

Billed as the Global Championship of Sixes, the 2026 edition will be held over three days, between Friday 30 October and Sunday 1 November at the Tin Kwong Road Recreational Ground, featuring a total of 12 nations - eight Full Members and four Associate Members of ICC.

MCC hopes the Spirit of Cricket Award will further encourage positive behaviour, respect for opponents and fair play throughout the tournament.

The Club recently announced a collaboration between MCC and ICC Europe, with an MCC Spirit of Cricket Award to be presented at each of the three ICC Europe Men’s Sub Regional World Cup Qualification events in Europe this summer, taking place in Cyprus, Denmark and Finland.

MCC also worked with the Cricket Association of Nepal (CAN) last year to promote the Spirit of Cricket at the Nepal Premier League, with CAN introducing a Spirit of Cricket Award for the tournament and presented to the Kathmandu Gorkhas.

All these awards are in addition to the main MCC Spirit of Cricket Award, which was created in 2013 by MCC and the BBC to honour Christopher Martin-Jenkins and was awarded to Mel Jones, Catherine Ordway and Emma Staples in 2025 for being instrumental in the evacuation of the Afghanistan women’s team to Australia.

Rob Lynch, Director of Cricket and Operations at MCC, said: “Despite the increasingly competitive nature of international and franchise cricket, many people have credited short‑form tournaments as catalysts for improvements in player behaviour across professional cricket.

“MCC wants to build on these foundations to see short tournaments as the standard‑bearers for playing the game in the right way – playing hard but playing fair and with a smile on your face. The Spirit of Cricket is an MCC‑led initiative, and we are pleased that Cricket Hong Kong has taken up this option to present their own award.”

Burji Shroff, Chairperson of Cricket Hong Kong said “We are thrilled and honoured to partner with MCC for the Spirit of Cricket Award at the iconic Hong Kong Sixes.

“With the increasingly competitive spirit that we see from modern day players, we believe that the sport must be played in the right spirit and each player and team must always uphold the principle of fair play, both on and off the field. We thank MCC for their partnership and for the validation that this brings to the values that Cricket Hong Kong holds dear.”
