On the opening day MCC had posted 265 all out, before Surrey reached 20 without loss at stumps.
The first session of the second day saw the hosts strike twice early on, as Essex’s Sam Cook dismissed openers Rory Burns and Mark Stoneman, with both catches taken by his county teammate Dan Lawrence as the champions were reduced to 38 for 2.
A moment of brilliance from MCC captain Stuart Broad saw a third wicket fall before lunch as the England paceman took a superb caught and bowled to dismiss Scott Borthwick, with 80 runs on the board.

Pope and Will Jacks combined for a fourth-wicket stand of 66 before the latter was also dismissed caught and bowled, this time by Somerset’s Peter Trego.
For the remainder of the day however, Surrey’s superb batsmen would dominate proceedings.
Pope was joined at the crease by Smith and the pair piled on the runs. Pope (183*) went past triple figures to record the first century of the 2019 first-class season, before Smith (123*) soon followed with the second.
By the close of play the pair had moved their side on to 389 for 4 at stumps, with 245 of those runs coming in a swift, unbeaten partnership.
