After Australia had scored a dismal total of 190 all out, McGrath was in fine form to put his side back in to the match.
The historic 500th wicket came when he dismissed Marcus Trescothick for four with Justin Langer taking a sharp catch in the slips.
The Aussie seamer then went on to claim the wickets of Andrew Strauss, Michael Vaughan, Ian Bell and Andrew Flintoff to make it on to the legendary Honours Boards for a third time.
In what was to be his last feat at Lord's, McGrath took a further four wickets in England's second innings as Australia sealed victory by 239 runs.
