J.E. Root 190 v South AfricaBack to boards

During his debut as England Test captain, Joe Root scored a record-breaking 190 versus South Africa in front of a sell-out crowd at the Home of Cricket.

In the first of a four Test matches against South Africa, the Yorkshire batsman had won his first toss and elected to bat, which looked to be the wrong decision when after just 5.2 overs, England found themselves 17-2.

However, showing a touch of class, Root managed to reach the Lord’s Honours Boards for the third time, hitting 190 off just 234 balls - the highest score by an England batsman in their first game as captain - with his country finishing their innings with a total of 458.

Root then lead his side to victory with Moeen Ali finishing the match with figures of 10/112 to defeat South Africa by 211 runs.
