Ray Illingworth’s best bowling performance in any innings of a Test match came against India at Lord’s in 1967.

In India’s second innings, he came on with the tourists having made 18, and except for changing ends bowled until the match was completed.

Illingworth took five for 12 in 10 overs, finishing with match figures of 7 wickets for 29 runs.

Later in his career Illingworth became captain of England following an injury to Colin Cowdrey, a position he held for 31 Test matches, and he managed to win the Ashes in 1970-1 and regain them in 1972.
