On their first visit to the Home of Cricket in Test Matches, Ireland shocked England to bowl out their hosts for only 85 in the opening session of the match. Ireland sealed a first-innings lead of 122 but England fared much better in their second innings, setting the visitors 182 to win.
The first two days of the match had been played in scorching conditions, however the third morning was perfect for seam bowling and Woakes took full advantage as Ireland were bowled out for only 38, the seventh lowest total in Test history.
The Warwickshire all-rounder finished with superb figures of 6 for 17 as England banished the memories of the first morning to win by 143 runs, a result that seemed unlikely on the opening day.
