D.L. Underwood 11-70 v New ZealandBack to boards

Derek Underwood’s figures of 11-70 at Lord’s against New Zealand in June 1969 was the first time that Underwood had achieved a ten-wicket haul in his Test career.

As Wisden reported, the New Zealand batsmen ‘were unable to cope with the bowling of Underwood on a curious, mottled pitch which gave the Kent left-hander enough assistance to rout batsmen never certain how to tackle him’.

Underwood took 4 wickets in the tourists’ first innings, including that of the captain G T Dowling, and took 7 for 32 in the second innings, including removing Hastings, Pollard and Taylor all for a duck, as England won by 230 runs.

Underwood went on to take another five ten-wicket hauls in his career.
