Ballance, batting at three, came into the match in fine form having already scored a hundred at Lord's earlier in the summer versus Sri Lanka.
However, after losing wickets early in their opening innings, England had to rely on the Yorkshire batsman, who returned to the Pavilion with a hard-fought 110 off 203 balls, in a knock that included 15 fours.
Despite Ballance’s innings - only his third at the Home of Cricket - England eventually lost the match by 95 runs, with India securing victory on Day Five.
