I.R. Bell 199 v South AfricaBack to boards

Ian Bell fell one short of what would have been a sublime double century on day two of the first Test versus South Africa in 2008.

Up against a fierce bowling attack in the shape of Dale Steyn, Makhaya Ntini and Morne Morkel, Bell displayed some superb shots in an innings that included 20 fours and a six.

Sharing a partnership of 286 with Kevin Pietersen, who made 152, Bell’s hundred – his third at the Home of Cricket - helped set a huge first innings total score of 593 before captain Michael Vaughan declared.

Despite Bell and Pietersen’s heroics, South Africa managed to hold out for the draw at the end of the fifth day.
